Saturday Photo Hunt - Clean |
Look NAMA! All clean!
Her Mama is gone to Scotland for the week with her friend who is dancing in the World Irish Dancing Competition.
Consequently she's been sleeping in our bed.

Foto Pherrets - Happiness |
I seem to recall they were both pretty happy that day. Second cousins to each other, having just met that day and sharing ice cream together.
Cian always made me laugh on that trip to Ireland because whenever we had to travel in the car anywhere he would always say "Which car is Séana going in? I want to go in the car with Séana".
What a kid. He is 8 or 9 years old now. I'm sure has changed lots.
Unfortunately, most of my Irish relatives are not hooked up on the internet so I don't exchange pictures or emails or anything like that. Only phone calls, which I need to do more of. This weekend for sure! It's Easter after all!

Thursday Thirteen #84, my #34 |
Cead Mile Failte (A Thousand Welcomes)
On Saturday Photo Hunt my architecture shot was of the Cathedral in and the Palais du Rhin in Strasbourg, France. Well I found so many interesting things about the city (beautiful photo here), that I thought I would turn it into a TT.
I have been there and I loved the city. Here is one of my favourite shots of the buildings in the area called Petite France, where buildings like this are a common site. Here's the same building from Wikipedia. INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THE STRASBOURG, France- Strasbourg is part of the Northeastern area, known as the Alsace region of France.
- It has a population of 650,000 and is right on the border of Germany.
- Strasbourg became part of Germany and under German rule a number of times in it's history. (at least twice if I am counting right!)
- During a dinner in Strasbourg organized by Mayor Frédéric de Dietrich on April 25, 1792, Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle composed "La Marseillaise", the National Anthem of France.
- As a result of the Franco-Prussian War, in 1871 Strasbourg was annexed to become part of Germany in 1871, without a referendum, via the Treaty of Frankfurt.
- As part of Imperial Germany, Strasbourg was rebuilt and developed into what was referred to as the Neue Stadt ("new city") including a newly constructed museum and library.
- Following the defeat of Germany in WW1, the city was restored to France, again without plebiscite / referendum. There was little structural damage to the city as a result of the first WW.
- Having been part of Germany for 47 years, Strasbourg remained heavily German-speaking well into the 20th century and Germany continued to covet it under Nazi rule.
- Following the Fall of France in 1940 during WW2, the city was annexed (yet again) by Nazi Germany. As one of the first official acts, the new rulers burnt and razed the main synagogue that had been a major architectural landmark and one of the largest in Europe since its completion in the late 1890's.
- After the war, Strasbourg was returned to France. There was extensive damage to the city caused by the Anglo-American bombers during raids in 1944, one of which was allegedly carried out by mistake.
- On November 22, 1944, the city was officially liberated by Général Leclerc, a major street now commemorates the day of liberation.
- In 2000, an Islamist plot to blow up the cathedral was prevented by German police.
- On July 6, 2001, during an open-air concert in the Parc de Pourtalès, a single falling tree caused one of the worst disasters of its kind in history, killing thirteen people and injuring close to hundred.
Voilà ! My photo montage of the city ... enjoy!
Bet you thought my TT was going to be all about Ireland for St. Patty's Day ay? Happy St. Patrick's Day all you Thursday Thirteeners! Irish Church Lady ( ICL )

Saturday Photo Hunt - Architecture |
INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT THE CATHEDRAL
Speaking of architecture, here is a photo that I took of the Palais du Rhin (Imperial Palace) in the area known to have the most German influence in the development of the city that is one of the largest fully preserved landmarks of 19th century Prussian architecture. It is the most political and thus heavily criticized of all German Strasbourg buildings and epitomizes the grand scale and stylistic sturdiness of this period. Here's the wikipedia shot.
So in researching the importance of these shots I was reminded of all the interesting information about the city so I am writing a Thursday Thirteen on it. Come back here on Thursday for Thursday 13 for interesting facts about Strasbourg! You'll learn all about the French and German roles in the development of the city

Oh dear |
~Dog~ My sisters new Puppy Crosby on the left and his sister Winnie on the right. Aren't they adorable? They are Miniature Golden Doodles. The owners of Winnie have allergies and have to give her up. My sister has taken her, but is now having second thoughts because of what she has read on the internet about raising puppies together. Her first hand research she has done (talked to dog club presidents, vet etc.) have been more positive. Anyone have any experiences they can relate? Advice good or bad? Saturday Photo Hunt - Antique |
Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral is antique (finished in 1345) and full of antiques. It was built in an age of illiteracy (imagine that) and so the the cathedral retells the stories of the Bible in its portals, paintings, and stained glass.
Here's an interesting bit of trivia - on December 2, 1804, after the anointing by Pius VII, Napoléon seizes the crown from the pontiff and crowns first himself, then Josephine, at the cathedral.
Here's the link to the actual Cathedral website. (not the easiest website to navigate!)
I can get lost on the web looking up things. Just so many interesting places to go and read.
Don't you find it's so much more interesting visiting a place when you know some of the history and the stories about it either by researching first or hearing a guided tour?
